Wool Felt vs Synthetic Felt: Which Should You Choose?

Wool felt and synthetic felt differ in fiber content, not just appearance. Wool felt contains animal wool; some products are blends. Synthetic craft felt commonly uses polyester or acrylic. Check the stated fiber percentages and the intended use before choosing.

Felt sheets and needle-felting wool are different materials to buy

Felt is a nonwoven material. A flat sheet for cutting and sewing is different from the loose wool roving used to sculpt a three-dimensional animal. Needle felting uses barbed needles to entangle loose fibers into a shape. Clover's felting tools guide explains that process.

Which should you choose for your project?

For a sculpted wool animal or pet portrait, choose roving suitable for needle felting rather than assuming a sheet of felt can substitute. For a sewn ornament or flat decoration, choose a sheet with the thickness, flexibility and fiber content your pattern calls for. Test a small sample before committing to the full project.

For a finished keepsake, compare craftsmanship, scale, included pieces and personalization alongside the material. A higher price or the word “natural” alone does not establish durability, environmental performance or suitability for every use.

Rayon is not the same as polyester

Rayon or viscose is a manufactured cellulosic fiber. It should not be described as a petroleum-based synthetic fiber like polyester. Lenzing describes the cellulose sources and processes used for viscose, modal and lyocell in its fiber technology overview. If felt contains rayon, use the actual blend label when comparing it.

Care depends on the finished piece

Do not assume all wool felt can be washed the same way. Woolmark advises checking a product's care instructions; machine-washable wool has appropriate treatment or processing. Does “felt” mean 100% wool?

No. The label may describe wool, synthetic fibers or a blend. Ask for the composition if it is not stated.

Is wool felt automatically safe as a child's toy?
